What is the funniest book I have recently read? Hmmm, tough one. I actually had to think about this since I do not usually read outright humorous books. There have been those stories that have the spattering of chuckle initiating paragraphs but the book itself is not funny as a whole. Take Marley and Me. There were gut busting, laugh out loud moments. I could completely relate since my lab Mikey’s motto is “Marley aint’ got nothing on me!!!” Then, there were gut wrenching, sobbing out loud moments. I just cannot count this as a funny read. So, what have I read that is actually funny?
Walking past one of my bookshelves, a title caught my eye. Aha!!! Now, that was a funny book my voice said to myself. That book would be The Zombie Survival Guide. Written by Max Brooks (son of Mel and writer for Saturday Night Live) the book covers everything from zombie physiology, the history of the rise of the zombies, defense and attack tactics, detailed long-term strategy plans, which weapons work best in which scenario against which zombie body part and the all important “Zombie Action Checklist” to keep track of zombie outbreaks in your area. Mr. Brooks has cleverly crafted a guide that is well researched, organized and vital in the battle for survival. The book is written in such a serious, no-nonsense tone, you may wonder if Mr. Brooks has actually thought about what he would do in a zombie attack. And that is exactly why it is so funny. Hats off to Max Brooks – I feel safer already!!!!

In other zombie news:
When words are not enough, Max Brooks has also created a powerful graphic novel illustrating recently recorded attacks (October 2009 release date but you can preorder to be ready). Click the picture for a little video snippet of this anticipated companion to Mr. Brook’s assemblage of zombie materials.
And even more zombieness:
Mr. Brooks seems to have covered all areas in order to get the word out in surviving a zombie attack including a website showing the latest zombie news, some snippets from the guide itself and a plethora of zombie links to keep you entertained as well as informed. Oh, the power of the internet!!!
