The great eReader quandary!

I want one! Simple as that! When eReader’s first showed up on the scene, I was salivating (reaching for napkin even now).  I was never a techie nerd but in the last few years, I am becoming a full-fledged geek about those shiny, sparkly, blinged out gadgets.  I may not be able to tell you one iota of how these devices of sublime joy function, why they function or even be able to get them to function but as a book lover tech nut, an eReader is the ultimate “have to have”.

My daughter asked what I am posting about?  I told her there was a great tidbit from a representative of IREX on the Book Blogger Appreciation Week website generously offering their latest eReader to a book blogger. She exhaled loudly as she rolled her eyes. Her question has always been why oh why do you want one when you know you will still buy the actual, physical books.  She is right about this one. I could never give up my books with their lovely covers and the scent of the paper within.  But, I know I wouldn’t buy as many. Think of the trees I would save not to mention, the space (to fill with more books – did I just say that out loud)! And oh the convenience, plop the little buddy in my purse and off we go. My daughter wouldn’t be embarrassed that her book reading mom is sitting there in the doctor’s office or some other place where you have to wait – I could be cool techno mom!

You may wonder what my dream eReader would consist of:

  • a styling stylus
  • easy navigation
  • easy on the eyes screen
  • automatic page save
  • ability to purchase books (and other reading materials) from a variety of sources
  • easy to clean screen
  • easy download
  • fair prices
  • ability to make notes, highlight, annotate
  • ample up-front memory with options to expand in future

Okay, that is enough. Heck, if you have to dream, dream big!

I’m kind of on the fence about them. Sure they sound cool and it would be handy to have on so I wouldn’t have to bring another book along when I’m almost done with one but I’m not sure how it would work with me walk reading. With a book I have mastered turning the page while wearing gloves and holding an umbrella. I’m just not sure about one of these little gadgets. Well I hope you’re able to get one.

As far as I’m concerned, an eReader is not complete without an internet connection. Using a laptop, for example, I’ll highlight text, look it up using Google, and/or Wikipedia ( etymology etc. ) and in a few cases, be talking to others about whatever it was I just looked up. On occasion one finds oneself speaking with the author …

The rumored Apple Tablet comes to mind …

Didn’t even think of that little snag – rain and an electronic gadget do not always go well together!

Don’t even get me started on those rumors. Good points. At least if I am out and about, I can highlight and then run home and jump on the computer.
