Holy smokes, I am able to actually get into my blog. It has been a few days and I was getting a little irritated. Very timely that it would be on a Teaser Tuesday. I am currently reading These Old Shoes by Georgette Heyer. I have just discovered Ms. Heyer’s books and am becoming a fan so far.

‘Then – I’ll try,’ said Leonie, a heartbroken catch in her voice. ‘You won’t l-leave me with y-your sister for l-long, will you?’

Wow, I have been immersed in Under the Dome (Stephen King) since the last Teaser Tuesday. The week has been busy for many reasons but I have been absorbed any free minute that becomes available. This teaser is taken from a conversation between two characters (under the dome) who are observing a meteor swarm where all of the stars appear pink and as they fall, pink lines are left behind.

She thought about that as they watched the silent pink tantrum in the sky. “Thurse, the little boy…Aidan…when he had that fit or whatever it was, he said…”

“I remember what he said. ‘The pink stars are falling, they make lines behind them.’”

“How could he know that?”

Thurston only shook his head.

So, I have finally started Under the Dome by Stephen King. Oh the bliss!!! This teaser is more then 2 sentences but they are short and powerful. And this is only from page 12.

The first was the woodchuck. It was whole, then it was in two pieces. Both were twitching and bleeding. Barbie stopped, mouth hanging open on the suddenly lax hinge of his lower jaw. It was as if an invisible guillotine blade had dropped. And that was when, directly above the severed woodchuck, the little airplane exploded.

My teaser this week is from Angel Time, the new novel by Anne Rice. I am gearing up to start this today so I have absolutely no idea what is going on.

Again he laughed lightly. “If I had been meant to prevent the murder, I would have done it,” he said. “You do remember reading that angels are essentially messengers, the embodiment of their function so to speak. Those words don’t come as any surprise but the surprise is obviously that I’ve been sent as a messenger to you.”

My teaser this week is from Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. I think this is such an appropriate teaser for all book lovers:

When I open them, most of the books have the smell of an earlier time leaking out between the pages – a special odor of the knowledge and emotions that for ages have been calmly resting between the covers. Breathing it in, I glance through a few pages before returning each book to its shelf.

Something I’ve been thinking about lately: “What words/phrases in a blurb make a book irresistible? What words/phrases will make you put the book back down immediately?”

I am not a blurb lover. I have fallen for blurbs before and felt misled or downright lied too when I finished the book. Words/phrases in a blurbs that do tend to catch my attention are “haunting”, “terrifying”, “keep the lights on and double check the doors scary” but I have yet to keep my lights on when I go to bed unless I fall asleep before turning them off. I may read a blurb by another author that I already enjoy in hopes that I would be able to trust him/her.

Blurbs that turn my off right away usually include words/phrases along the lines of  “a love story like no other”, “your life will be successful”, “must-read” pretty much any lovey dovey/read this or be a loser/there has never been a better book are a sign for me to move on down the bookshelf.

So what about you, are there those shiny words or phrases that peak your interest? And what makes you run?

I knew I would not wake up to my alarm. I take that back, I woke up, turned it off and went right back to bed. I barely remember. I did wake up at 3:00 or the dogs woke me up. This better not become a habit. There are only 30 minutes left of my 24 hours. I am closing the book on this challenge now to update and participate in the End of Event meme.  This has been such great fun. The cheerleaders, mini-challenges and meme’s have just added to the experience. I may not have read as much as I hoped but it was well worth participating. Looking forward to the next read-a-thon.

End of Event meme

1. Which hour was most daunting for you? Hour 16 is when the sleepiness hit at full-speed.
2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? Rebecca completely held my interest. The time flew while I was reading it.
3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? I truly do not – this was wonderfully organized and promoted. Congrats to those heading up this wonderful project.
4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? The mini-challenges and meme’s were great fun. The broke up the reading. I especially loved the comments from the cheerleaders. Gave me somthing to look forward to each hour.
5. How many books did you read? Did not finish one.  Oh well!
6. What were the names of the books you read? I read part of Rebecca and Ecoholic.
7. Which book did you enjoy most? Rebecca
8. Which did you enjoy least? None
9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders? n/a
10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?  I would most definitely participate again. I may want to be a cheerleader. I enjoyed the motivation they provided and think it would be great fun to check on everyone’s progress.

Thanks again to the cheerleaders and especially the organizers. Amazing job!
