I am so behind in all things blogging. Life can sure get the better of you (as can a slipped disc – twice) but I feel horrible and unreliable as far as reviews, announcing giveaway winners and just generally being part of the “scene”. So, in hopes of starting down the road in making up for lost time, I am now congratulating some loooong overdue winners.

Invisible Prey – Days of Prey Tour/Review/Giveaway

In celebration of the release of the 20th book in the Prey series by John Sandford, Penguin books, working with TLC Book Tours has set up a unique tour where 20 bloggers were each asked to read one book from the series and answer a set of questions concerning their particular book and the main character, Lucas Davenport.

I was thrilled to catch up with one of my favorite crime busters. I started listening to the Prey series on audio books but got off track when my library didn’t have each book in the series. Invisible Prey was a great reminder as to why I enjoy these books and I am now on a mission to read the entire series. The main character of Lucas Davenport is tough, a little bit of a ladies man, pushes the envelope and stops at nothing to solve cases. I adore this character. The stories and dialogue between him and other officers, criminals and those of the female persuasion are pure entertainment. One of the great things about Mr. Sandford’s books is that even though the reader may know who the criminal is the fun comes from following Lucas as he tries to solve the crimes. This may be a series but each book can stand on it’s own for a great read.

I must admit, I am late in my posting of this tour stop. I sincerely apologize to Penguin and TLC Book Tours for this delay and appreciate the fact that I was able to be part of this experience.

On with the questions:

Invisible Prey – number 17 in the series.

Year published:

2007

What is Lucas Davenport doing when he first appears in the book:

Lucas is drinking diet cokes at a bar which belongs to a good friend. They are talking about their families and the jobs. Lucas then turns the conversation to the case he is working on as the suspect is a politician that went to school with his pal. The accusations are crude and involve a minor and Lucas is trying to get a feel for the type of person the politician is and whether he could have committed the alleged crime. There is some thought that the mother of the minor may be attempting and extortion of some kind but the evidence is pretty damning.

Give a sense of time and place:

It is 2007 and most of the story takes place in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota.

What is Lucas’s occupation or professional role?

He is Chief Investigator for the State’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).

Lucas’s personal status?

Lucas is now married. Quite a surprise. The last book I had read he was still single. He also now has a daughter from a previous relationship and a son with his current wife.

Lucas is a known clothes-horse. Were there any special fashion references:

Oh yes, Mr. Davenport has style.

Lucas went for Italian suits, French ties, and English shoes. He read men’s fashion magazines, of the serious kind, and spent some time every spring and fall looking at suits. When he and his wife traeled to Manhattan, she sent to the Museum of Modern Art, he went to Versace.

Avoiding spoilers, what was the crime/case being solved:

There were actually two cases that were being investigated. The first was the allegations against the politician. The second was the horrific beating death of an elderly woman and her housekeeper in one of the most affluent neighborhoods in the city. The crime first appears to be a possible burglary gone bad since only a few things were missing and the house was full of valuables. Lucas knows that not everything is as it first appears and when another murder takes place (seemingly unrelated), he begins to search for a common denominator.

Does the title of the book relate to the crime:

The title is perfect. The reader is introduced to the killers immediately but to Lucas and his team, they seem invisible. As they investigate deeper, commonalities appear but the identity of the killers truly remains invisible.

Who was your favorite character, good or evil:

Obviously, Lucas Davenport is a favorite. I was happy to find another detective from Mr. Sandford’s series – Virgil Flowers. He is a bit of a rogue, could care less about what he looks like, and hauls his fishing boat with him on many of his investigations.

What was your favorite scene or quote:

I loved those bits of the story that portray the personal side of Lucas: singing along to Emmylou Harris on the radio, spending time with his family, and admitting his bouts with depression. These small paragraphs create a character with more dimensions then “cop”.

How do you envision Lucas Davenport? If he were portrayed in a movie, what celebrity would play him:

This is difficult as I have my own image of Lucas but if I had to choose, I could definitely see Timothy Olyphant (currently on the great show “Justified”) as a contender.

Raven Stole the Moon – Review/Giveaway

Robert and Jenna – the couple with everything. That is until they lose their only son, Bobby in a tragic drowning while on vacation in Alaska. Robert desperately wants to move on with their lives while Jenna is trapped in a constant state of despair as the accident happened while she was with Bobby. The stress proves too much for Jenna and she flees her marriage and life in Seattle to visit her grandmother’s hometown in Alaska which just happens to be located near the Thunder Bay Resort, the location of her son’s death.

Raven Stole the Moon follows Jenna’s journey in Alaska and Robert’s journey to find her. Jenna is mysteriously drawn to Alaska. She has a sense that there is something unfinished concerning her son’s death. Is it because his body was never found or is it guilt eating at her that she didn’t do everything she could to save him? While touring the town of Wrangell, she has what seems like supernatural encounters and the feeling that things are not what they appear. Jenna learns of the beliefs and legends of the Tlingits, the North American Indian tribe that was her grandmother’s, concerning the kushtaka, shape-shifting otter-like creatures that have been known to lure people to their deaths and transform them into a fellow kushtaka. Could this be what happened to her son? Is this why Jenna seems to be seeking out answers?

I really did enjoy my time spent with Raven Stole the Moon. There were elements of magic and mystery, shape-shifters and shamans, romance and a violence (nothing shocking). The characters are interesting and the dialogue between them really lends to the overall “feeling” of the book. The edition I read was actually a release of a new edition of the book which was originally published in 1998. In the afterword, author Garth Stein explains his relief that he felt he did not need to rewrite large parts of his original version including the lack of technology (pretty amazing a time without cell phones and the internet) and I am glad that he left things pretty much as is. I believe a story should be kept true to it’s original form.

I was very excited to have this opportunity to review this release (offered by Sarah from Terra Communications Book Marketing). As I am an Enzo fan – Enzo being the star of Mr. Stein’s extremely popular and wonderful The Art of Racing in the Rain – I was very curious to see how Mr. Stein’s first work compared. Both books featured very believable and realistic characters but I do believe the author’s writing has gained a better voice and has evolved. Raven Stole the Moon is an engaging book with a great appeal.

I was lucky enough to receive a couple of awards.

The “Ooh La La! I adore your blog!” award came from J. Kaye and it does come with a few questions attached.

Where is your favorite place to read a book? That would be on my comfy chair in the living room.
Bookmarks or dog ears? Both actually. I buy mostly used books and I will dog ear those if the book lover before me already had some ear flaps of their own. New books or those in super condition always get a bookmark.
What is the best book you have read so far this year? Oh my, this is a difficult one. Off the top of my head, The Road, Kafka on the Shore, Good Omens, I Am Legend and Her Fearful Symmetry come to mind but are by no means my only favorites.
Do you like to snack while reading and if so, what is your favorite snack? I usually have a cup of tea but surprisingly, not a big snacker. I do not want my hands occupied by anything else. They need to be available at all times to hold a book and turn a page.
Book borrower or book collector? Collector, collector, collector!! Wait a minute, I need to pick up that pile of books that has toppled.

Simon’s Cat – Review/Giveaway

I am not sure if it is because I am owned by two cats that I am in love with Simon’s Cat by Simon Tofield. I had actually never seen the You Tube animations but after reading the entire book yesterday and giggling, nodding my head in agreement, falling out of my chair, wiping tears of laughter and recovering from that stiffness you get in your cheeks due to smiling so much, I jumped on the computer and started the laugh-fest all over again. This is such a happy-hearted, joyous book and the author is spot-on in portraying behavior of the feline kind as well as those who are slave to the cat! I cannot recommend this book enough for cat lovers, those thinking of adopting a cat and even for those non-cat fanatics. I was thinking of giving this book to my Aunt (slave to 6 cats and no, she is not a cat lady in the traditional sense) but I am so smitten with Simon’s Cat that I am going to have to buy her a copy. This is a book that has a home in my permanent collection.
